Netbackup 7.6.0.2 master/media server and client.

In order to use synthetic backups I have turned on True Image Restore, but am finding the TIR data is being pruned too soon.

Initially I found my differentials were running as fulls and Synthetic Fulls were only partially complete because of missing TIR data.

I was seeing warning messages about "old TIR file /usr/openv/netbackup/tir_info/.../NetBackup_file_info is missing. Backing up everything in <path>".

I found the configuration section in the master server properties where this TIR data pruning time interval can be adjusted (default is 1 day). I have adjusted this up to 120 days but am finding the data is still being pruned at about 10 days. 

My backups (~100TB) take about 2 weeks to complete over our dedicated WAN link and I am finding that by the time the next incremental attemts to run, the missing TIR data causes the incremental to effectively be a full. This becomes a viscious circle and I can never seem to get ahead.

Does anyone know if TIR data pruning can go past 10 days? I couldnt find any upper limit in the docs. 

Am I missing some other fundamantal issue?

Do I have to do SCAN the library everytime when I put old tapes (old backup set cartrdiges like week 2, week 3)  so that new backup may be overwritten on it (I have OP set to none)?

As I can see that backup job auto overwrite data on older tapes with new data , even if I donot do scan. So why to do scan or inventory ?

I have a strange issue and hope someone can help me out with this.

I have just startet to take backup of some SAP HANA system that are running on SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 (i have backup running on other linux system just fine) 

I have tried different Backup Method and reinstalled the agent and tried on another system (have 3 of them at the moment) (it's just a file backup im tried to do)

It just keep running until i have to cancel it. It take backup up to around 9 TB of data! and the system is about 300-600 GB MAX! and the job rate can go up to about 27.386MB/min :-O 

And the backup is just "dumping" the backup to a network share (synology box)

I have verified our selection list on the system and everything with our guy that know the linux / sap hana system very well.

I have attached 2 files with the logs of one of the tried. Let me know if you have any idea how to solve it or if you want to know some more information and i will look into it :-)

We have one media master server with two NICS on it. I've configured the local hosts file so that all communication goes through one NIC. So far, things have worked great. For some reason, two clients cannot connect on socket and as far as my network admin, no changes were made last night.

as an exacmple.

one client. client1.fqdn.com is in the hosts file as: client1

running bptestbpcd against client1 causes socket errors. running it against client1.fqdn works fine

both entries are in host file

10.94.x.x     client1

10.94.x.x   client1.fqdn.com

(i added fqdn recently for testing)

now, while writing this up, i discovered something...

bpclntcmd -hn for client1 is showing the wrong I

running this same command on other clients in the host file shows the proper 10.94 address.

Example:

D:\>bpclntcmd -hn client1
host client1: client1.fqdn.com at 10.176.x.x <<< WRONG ADDRESS.
aliases:   client1.fqdn.com              client1     10.176.x.x

D:\>bpclntcmd -hn client2
host client2: client2 at 10.94.x.x << CORRECT ADDRESS for client2
aliases:     client2     10.94.x.x

For client 2, it works fine and doesn't show the fqdn. looks like the first example is resolving via DNS.  Now, strange thing is, all other clients resolve just fine, but, only 2 are affected right now.

the NIC that belongs to 10.94.x.x is at the top of the list in the binding order and hasn't changed. This NIC does not have any DNS servers specified.

NB7601, Solaris master/media svr plus windows 2008r2 media server. The latter has 2 drives for doing ndmp backups and two for non-ndmp and is the one I have a question about. The drives are hp lto4 fibre, in a HP msl robot.

In over three years there has not been at any time a tapealert to clean a drive. I'm struggling to believe this can be real. The drives are heavily used overnight and at weekends yet not a single clean. Tapealert is enabled, there is a cleaning tape (but of course its never been requested), and I've run the robot with auto-clean both off and on ( more out of curiosity : I believe it should be off ). My other media server gets through cleaning tapes regularly though there are 10 drives in my other robot and they are IBM LTO4: the loads are similar but the 10drive robot is a couple of years older.

There are tapealert msgs in the bptm log: process_tapealert / tapealert_and_release /  0x0 0x0, which suggests its all working fine.

Your thoughts and experiences appreciated. It would be nice to be able to trigger a tapealert just to check it does do as its supposed.

1:- to retain the file or folder level permission in restore case is it neccessary to take system state backup? if we take only file or folder backup and we restore it ..will it take the permission as the time of backup  or we need to enable something?

2:- What will happen if we restore it to another folder (Permissions).?

Users working with the machine DESKTOP and the agent was successfully installed, the backup performed correctly and when restoration showed successfully, the user change a machine LAPTOP agent was installed successfully HOWEVER does not restore backup goes into status as FAILED.

I recently had fully encrypted hard disk (Toshiba mq01abd075), operating system (Windows 7 Professional), two partition. C (146 GB) and D (548 GB) and 4 GB Unallocated space.

I ran the system restore for partition C, after which I was unable to access the operating system. I reinstalled the operating system partition C. I installed PGP WDE, when I entered in the program, partition D does not appear to be decrypted. Partition D appears in My Computer (0 bytes), in computer management at disk management appear 548 GB RAW. If I double click on it ask me for Format, but i've never click Yes, so the second partition was never touch after the problem.After this I reinstalled twice the OS.

Now I have windows 8.1 but stil,but still I have not touch the second partition.

I've tried to decrypt the drive with a few tutorials such as(WinPE and put the hard disk as second partition):

Hi: backup exec 2014, windows 2008 server.    Question: is there a way for BE to send an email when an action is asked? (ie: change the tape?)

Seperate policies are created for respective server with DB mounted

local disk backups are 100mb/s+ ... whereas Exchange SAN backups don't exceed more than 10mb/s... its strange!!!

SAN topology is of 4 gbps

buffer tuning helped local backups to offer max speed... but don't know what could i tune here... Can Rep Director help here?

Also wanted to know how Snapshot policy can help reduce window?

When the BMR boot server is upgraded from a previous version and especially when there are few existing SRTs (shared resource trees) available, the upgrade process does not automatically clean-up the older MS-WinPE 2.1 images. These need to be cleaned up manually.  If the manual cleanup is not done, there is a risk creating subsequent SRTs which will have the wrong version of MS-WinPE.  This can impact restores.

BMR, at present the restore action re-configures the network details on the client system as defined by the retrieved client configuration. This action may overwrite the IP details provided by the user with the details used during the client’s backup. For example, in case the recovery happens on other subnet,  the ip-details as available in the configuration may not be valid. This can then result into client-master communication failure due to invalid network re-setup.

We are planning to implement Netbackup 7.6 and deploy multiple media servers that will perform backups to a Data Domain storage server.

One storage unit will be created on the Data domain system and presented to the netbackup domain, the a disk pool and a storage unit will be created in netbackup against that data domain storage unit (LSU).

I need to understand how to configure media server load balancing so backups to that storage unit are load balanced across the 3 media servers that will be provisioned. We are not planning to use storage unit groups (we will only have one storage unit). So, under the storage unit properties, if i select the option to tick the three media servers as the media servers that will have access to that storage unit... will that automatically implement load balancing between the three media servers? or do I need to do anything else?

I hope you can help me out.  Several months ago, my company added a new MSA disk pool to replace our aging DataDomain disk pool.  All backup policies were reconfigured to stop using DataDomain and, originally, the usage on DataDomain dropped as backups aged and expired.  The problem is that the Data Domain usage only dropped to 14% and has been stuck there for over a month.  When I go into the NetBackup GUI (version 7.1) and navigate to "Media and Device Management"> Devices > Disk Pools, it displays 2.5677 TB used oiut of 18.1005 TB total (about 14%). 

I'm not sure why these backups are not expiring.  After doing some reading, I ran the following from D:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd on my NetBackup admin host:

The server APP_SRV29 no longer exists so we certainly don't need to keep these backups (because all backups are for disaster recovery, not historical snapshots).  After some more reading, I found documents talking about bpexpdate.  Unfortunatetly, using this command gives me "no entry was found":

bpexpdate  -backupid APP-SRV29_1357349450 -d 0

Oddly, even though the bpimmedia command shows the Policy of APP_SRV29, the bpimagelist shows nothing:

I am very frustrated.  I have 2.6 TB of backups sitting in my disk pool that I can see but not clean up.  Can anyone offer me help on how to delete these backup IDs?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for a Backup solution for our environment. It has 2 hosts running Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 on 10.0.99.x network with 10 VM's each.VM's have applications like

1) Active Directory

2) Sharepoint 3)SAP

VM's run on 10.0.99.x and 10.0.90.x.

We also need to take backup of one physical file server which is running windows server 2008 R2. 

Question : Would we be able to install windows agent on Windows 2012 R2 Core edition, so that  we can install on the hyper-v host and take backup of the .VHDX files which are stored on the host machines ?

which one best suits us .. Backup Exec 2014 software or backup exec applicance ?

Hello Everyone,,

I have Oracle Enterprise linux version 6.32  installed on a server which is connected by fiber to SAN Storage.

This server is connected to San storage by multipath, and so I have in /dev/mapper files ( 7 byte each) that represent storage on SAN.

The problem is that, I need to backup files from the SAN storage, How I can do that??

Note: I use symantec Backup Exec 2014.
