Backup Exec 2012 using all the memory

I need a solution

I have an extremely odd issue that just started happening a few days ago.  I have Backup Exec 2012 (Version 14 Rev. 1798) running on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box that is also my file server and domain controller.  I came in Wednesday and noticed I did not get my automated email that tells me the backup job had completed successfully.  I got on the server and seen that the bengine.exe process was using 98% of RAM and the backup job was still running.  I rebooted the server and the backup ran fine after the server came back online and finished as usual.  However, its done the exact same thing the last 2 days, but since its my DC and file server I can't just reboot it once employees start showing up so the backup isn't completing.  I restarted all backup exec services today and manually fired off the backup and this is what I've found:

-Initally the job says "Ready, no backup exec servers found"

-After about 5 minutes the job actually starts running and the memory usage is only about 10%

-The transfer rate starts at about 850MB/min and then goes down about 1MB every 3 seconds until it gets down to around 450/MB min

-Eventually the backup shows it has backed up the same amount of data as whats on the server, so almost like it has completed the job

So sounds good right?  Problem is that the job never completes in Backup exec and it just sits there, maxed out at 231GB (which is all my data).  The transfer rate continues to climb and climb and climb along with my memory usage until it eventually maxes out my memory.  I looked on my media and it looks like all the data is there so it seems like the problem is Backup Exec is having an issue with finishing/closing the job.  Does anyone have any idea what this might be from?

How can I alternate full and incremental backups?

I need a solution

Currently I have a policy where I run a full backup three days a week and an incremental four days a week (the days are hardcoded in the schedules).

I tried setting up a test policy with the full backup to run every 2 days at 10 am.  And then I also defined a incremental schedule to run every 2 days at 10 am.   When the policy ran for the first time (yesterday) it ran the full backup (as expected).

I hoped to see that the incremental schedule would have then run today but it didnt.

Anyone have any ideas on how to alternate full and incrementals every other day?

Cannot catalog backups from earlier Version

I need a solution

I am currently running Backup Exec 10d using Backup to Disk backups

One job in one folder is allowing restores without issue

Another folder cannot restore files from backup files present returning error The query for media sequence number -13119 of this media family was unsuccessful.
Ensure that all media in the family have been inventoried and cataloged.

The backups are not protected with a password

I have reviewed all of the technotes on the issue and followed through on all of the suggestions

- unchecked the "Use Storage based Catalogs"

- rebuilt the catalog

- created new folders and housed new backup jobs in those folders

   - these too fail

- moved the files to another Drive and recataloged

Symantec acknowleges that this is an issue for this version and all others up to Backup Exec 12.5 but will not fix it. I accept that.

I have now installed a trial version of Backup Exec 14.1 on another server and imported the files to that server with the hope that their statement that the issue is resolved in this new version includes the addition of routines that assist in resolving issues like mine.

So far

-Inventory jobs run fine

-Catalog jobs return the error

Final error: 0xe0008105 - Invalid Physical Volume Library Media Identifier.
        Final error category: Job Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33029

- the error appears when I uncheck the "Use Storage based Catalogs" as well

I have also rebuilt the catalogs on the 14.1: At one point in my adventure, it did read part of one file when I unchecked "Request all media in sequence". No other attemps show any change in the catalog state.

SGMon shows that it is reading all of the files but also refers to the dreaded {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}:

Netbackup Domain Migration - Recovery without import tips?

I need a solution

Hello,

Getting ready to do a Netbackup migration from v7.1.0.3 to v7.6.0.4. -  with the migration moving from one Netbackup domain with servers running W2K3 joined to Active Directory Domain "X" to a new Netbackup domain with servers running W2K8R2 joined to Active Directory Domain "Y".   The same storage devices (ie. tape libraries, OST devices, etc) are being used.

Familiar with the limitations of moving a Netbackup catalog to a new master server with a different name.  We have gotten around this in the past - albeit the new Netbackup system had all new storage devices.  Essentially - what we did is built a "net new" Netbackup environment and retired the existing environment (including storage devices) with the exception of the lone Master Server.  The lone Master Server was essentially turned into a read-only catalog look-up for restoring legacy data.  When one of the backup operators get a request to restore data that pre-dates the existing Netbackup system - they would go to what i call the "Legacy Master Catalog Lookup Server" to lookup the tapes needed to restore the requested the data.  Once they had identified and recalled the tapes - they would simply perform an import of the tapes into the new Netbackup environment and restore the data.  This has worked well for several years and allowed us to avoid having to import the old catalog and a few thousand tapes into the new Netbackup system (the legacy NB was using LTO2 drives and the new Netbackup system had new LTO4 drives - hence we didn't want to import all of the LTO2 tapes).  No disk/OST existed on the orginal Netbackup system.  The only caveat was that you have to essentially freeze the lone Netbackup server so no changes would ever be made to the databases/images etc. - we even virtualized the Catalog Lookup server - so we didn't have to maintain the old hardware.

With this upcoming migration - we do not have new storage devices.  Currently, the new 7.6.0.4 Netbackup environment can see all of the storage devices/OST shares, etc. of the existing 7.1.0.3 Netbackup environment.  We - for obviously reasons have not run any jobs on the new system - looking at doing a cut-over on a single weekend.   We were originally planning on doing what we had done with the previous migration - creating a stand-a-lone NB Catalog lookup server but after reading through the Recovery Without Import - Whitepaper - it appears we might be able to leverage it to move the exsiting catalog info into the new system without having to touch the physical media.   At least from what i'm reading - it warrants looking into further.

If anyone has successfully used the Recovery Without Import methodology - would greatly appreciate any insight, tips, gotchas that would help us make a decision on whether or not to use this methodology.

Thx,

Greg

VTL and physical tape library get stuck at mounting

Hi I have a new setup

Issue I am having is that while configuring devices the drives dont show as attached to the tape library and lists as standalone.I manually try and add the drives to each robot and seems to work only that during the backup test the job is stuck at mounting for VTL and MSL library.

Couple of things I noticed..

1) In the above output of scan the 2nd changer (VTL) doesnt show any device name or pass thru name..

Under device manager this shows up as unknown medium changer even though the drivers are installed and i cant seem to get it to change.

2) While configuring the MSL 4048 library using the device config wizrd in the box where it shows "review the devices netbackup has found" the MSL has an red X sign stating unusable. When i check the properties it shows "Illegal drive type in robot."

But this is a standard MSL 4048 HP tape library with LTO6 tape drives .

I dont see any hardware related errors in event logs.

Any suggestions..for both these issues ?

Thanks

Backup Exec 2014SP2 only storing 1TB on 1.4TB LTO5 Tape??

I need a solution

I am replacing a Windows 2003 server with BE 2010 with a new server running Windows 2012r2 and BE2014SP2.  On the old server I can back up 2TB of data on to an LTO5 tape because of compression.  On the new server I have copied the exact same data from the old server and move the old tape drive over and now I can only store 1TB before it prompts me for a new tape.  I have hardware compression enabled on the tape drive.  Here is what the first tape stats look like:

Media Capacity:  1.39TB

Used Capacity:  1.39TB

Backup Data Written:  0.989 TB

Available Capacity:  1.85 GB

Compression Ratio:  1:1

What could be causing this?  The Drive is an HP LTO5 SAS drive on a Dell R720 server.

Is a Windows 2012R2 Dedupe-aware backup to tape option available?

I have BE2014SP2 installed on a Windows 2012R2 server.  On one of the data drives I have turned on the native Windows local disk de-dupe feature.  This has cut the disk space needed from from 2TB to only 1TB.  I would like to back this up on to a single LTO5 tape.  With BE2012 and compression I could just fit the 2TB compressed data on to a 1.4TB LTO5 tape.  Now that the data on the server is only 1TB, is there any option to have BE back up the de-duped data so only 1TB of tape space is needed?   The native Windows Backup application is de-dupe aware and only backs up the 1TB of de-duped data but BE appears to still need to "re-hydrate" the data and back up the full 2TB.  I have also tried EMC networker which appears to be de-dupe aware but I do not have a local tape option with that (backups are sent to a remote data center over a WAN).  Is there any way to get BE2014 to be de-dupe aware or is that a feature that may be coming soon?

Basic Disk clone and replication

I need a solution

Hello,

I'm working with Storage and I'm new with NetBackup.

I have two storages that are allowed to perform replication of LUNS. I don´t have qlogic HBAs to perform the Fibre Transport Configuration.

In my environment, one media_server is remote and doesn´t exists a tape library in the remote location ( less than 100 GB of Backup Daily are generated). the other MediaServer has a tape Library.

I´m thinking with abouth the Basic Disk Format:

When a backup is performed on a Basic Disk format, it generates a file with the backup content or are created several scattered files that represent the backup that was done?

Later I can migrate this Basic Disk to Tape?

If this Basic Disk is coupled to a Media Server, rather than being linked to the Master Server in any case the Master Server database will be updated in order to allow to perform data restoration, right?

But:

1 - If a backup is performed on a MediaServer_A to the Basic Disk;
2 - So, This Basic Disk is detached from the Media Server (MediaServer_A);
3 - Cloned and Replicated using the Storage;
4 - Going mounted to another Media Server (MediaServer_B);

The MediaServer_B would be able to recognize the Basic Disk?

Could from MediaServer_B  copy the data to a tape ?

Once the MediaServer_B could recognize the basic disk generated by MediaServer_A, the MasterServer NetBackup could recognize that he changed his backup media server?

To return to MediaServer_A:

    1 - Remove the MediaServer_B disk;
    2 - Restore the mount point Media_server_A;
3 - Remove the clone / previous snap up next window for new clone or pointer.

Have you ever seen this kind of situation before ?

Best Regards,

I need a solution

Hello Experts,

We were experiencing issue in one of our master server i.e Win2008. So we moved the netbackup services to Node1. backup ran fine for 2-3 hours and later they were giving the error code 98 on the Node1. So finally we moved the netbackup services to node2 that was actual and backups were fine.

(1) There were the below event logs on node1

TLD(1) [7808] unable to read exit status from tldcd: Error number:  (10060), stat = -3

TLD(1) [12200] Drive 7 (device 5) has not become ready. Last status: The requested resource is in use.

TLD(1) [13832] Drive 2 (device 2) has not become ready. Last status: The requested resource is in use.

Request for media ID L00087 is being rejected because mount requests are disabled (reason = robotic daemon going to DOWN state)

Pls help.

(2) Whenever we move netbackup services from Node1 to Node2 or vice versa we are losing the activty job logs. I mean if 10 jobs are running on node 1 and we have to move  netbackup services to Node2. On node 2 we could see only the new jobs not the 10 jobs that were running on node1 same is happening on  other server as well.

Pls help

I need a solution

Hi,

BE client is scheduled to migrate from Win2003 to Win2008 R2. Thus BE agent need to reinstall in new server.

Since I have copied "C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\Agents\RAWSx64" to new server. It will be installed after changed IP / hostname.

But how to I "Trust" this server after installed agent ?

Thanks

I need a solution

I am currently having a performance issue with a VM client backup running extreamly slow that is located on a DMZ. For testing purposes and for future rollouts we want to create a Backup network to bypass the firewall to see if that is the issue. We created a second virtual NIC on the VM and gave it an address on the same subnet as the Master. Will I need to alter my host file on the Master to point it to the new NIC and clear the Host Cache with bpclntcmd -clear_host_cache ? Is there a better way to configure a Static route to the new NIC?

BE can't see StorageLoader's 8th slot

I need a solution

Backup Exec 2014 is being used in conjunction with a Tandberg 7813 StorageLoader robotic tape drive (LTO5).  This unit has 8 slots.  All has been working satisfactorily for some time, but now BE cannot see the last slot (#8) in the robotic unit.  The Tandberg web software shows the slot operational and holding a tape, but BE cannot see it and reports only 7 slots.

No slot is marked as a cleaning slot or mail slot.

I have done a repair installation on the BE software; a scan and inventory on the device, a full reinstall of the device drivers, all to no effect.

The Knowledgebase doesn't have anything helpful.  Can anyone suggest a fix other than a complete reinstall?

Cataloging of tape produces unexplainable results

I need a solution

I have many LTO tapes that are a few years old. I am trying to determine the contents so I can make a decision as to if we should archive/reuse/scrap them. The first tape shall be referred to as tape # 1.

I have the default option for 'catalogs' DE-selected regarding  the "Request all media in the sequence for catalog operations."

Question

Tape 1 is inventoried successfully. I then run a catalog job and after a short while I am prompted to insert media tape # 2.  Why is that?

Question 2 that is now perplexing based on first question

A perform a mock 'restore job' to see what is available. Interestingly, when I go to the 'View by Media' tab, I see the contents from tape # 2 which will allow me to select it to 'restore'. However, tape # 1 does not even show up in the 'View by Media' tab. How could that be?
