Do I really need the Hyper-V Agent?

I need a solution

I think I know the answer here, but wanted to make sure I understood it correctly.

I have a windows 2012 Cluster running BEWS2012. Attached to the same SAN\RAID, I have another cluster running MS Hyper-V and say 10 clustered Virtual Machines.

Do I need to have the Hyper-V agents to backup the Virtual machines? The goal would be to back them up while running of course. My understanding is the Agents allow me to backup the entire VM to include it's current state, if that VM exploded, I could just restore from the last backup and off I go.

Without the Agents, I don't get a full VM backup, I get a what? just the guts. Meaning I need to restore a base VM and apply the backup to get the settings?

Or is my understanding all wrong? Ideally if I don't really need the agents we don't want to buy them for nohting. But, if our config pretty much mandates the agents, we'll get them,

Thanks
